Digital vs Acoustic

    Accessorize It!

Why Buy a digital piano instead of an acoustic piano?

Affordable -- a digital piano is less expensive

Never needs tuning  -- an acoustic piano is a complex musical instrument with hundreds of moving parts and precisely tuned strings. It needs to be tuned regularly and sometimes even repaired. A digital piano always stays in perfect pitch no matter what the temperature or humidity.

Easily moved -- weighing between 40 and 100 pounds, a digital piano can be moved by two adults anywhere in your house or loaded into the car for a performance or studio session across town.

Private playing -- headphones! Dad can watch football while Jimmy practices scales. A must for apartments. Some models have dual headphone jacks, allowing you to share your music with a teacher or friend.

The possibilities . . .

  • Select a voice -- digital pianos offer impeccable grand piano voices (or "sounds") plus other instrument voices including organ, strings, and harpsichord. What better way to learn baroque and classical pieces than by playing them using sounds from that period.
  • Connect to your personal computer -- a simple cable is your gateway to a world of creative and educational opportunities. You don't have to be a pianist to enjoy this instrument.
  • Amplify your sound -- a volume control and audio output allows easy connection to an amplifier or sound system (PA system) if needed. Much easier than miking an acoustic piano!

MORE possibilities . . . depending on the make and model:

  • Transpose to a different key  -- A vocalist's dream come true. If, for example, you learned a piece of music in the key of A-flat, but you're playing an accompaniment for someone who needs you to play the same piece in the key of D, you can transpose at the press of a button, allowing you to play the piece in the key you're used to.
  • Enhance your sound -- simulate the sound of playing in a concert hall by using a reverb effect or add fullness to sounds by using a chorus effect.
  • Record and playback your performance -- a sequencer allows you to record your practices to listen and analyze. Email your performances to friends and relatives.

Buying a digital piano is a long-term investment, so choose one that meets your needs. Consider its sound and the keyboard feel, the style of cabinet, power of the sound system, and the electronic features included.
